A rare Dinar of Bahram I

SASANIAN KINGS. Bahram I, 273-276. Dinar (Gold, 22 mm, 7.09 g, 3 h). Draped bust of Bahram I to right, wearing diadem and radiate crown with a great korymbos on top and long earflaps; two ribbons rising from behind head; legend along the dotted rim, running anticlockwise from 11 h to 1 h, ‘mzdysn bgy wrhrʾn MRKAn MRKA ʾyrʾn W ʾnyrʾn MNW ctry MN yzdʾn’ = ‘mazdēsn bay Wahrām šāhān šāh Ērān ud Anērān kē čihr az yaz(a)dān’ (‘The Mazda-worshipping Lord, Bahram, King of Kings of the Iranians and Non-Iranians, whose essence is from the gods’ in Pahlavi). Rev. Zoroastrian fire altar flanked by two attendants, wearing different types of crowns and holding scepters; pellet and star (?) flanking the flames; to right and left, ‘NWRA ZY – wrhrʾn’ = ‘ādur ī Wahrām’ (‘Fire of Bahram’ in Pahlavi). Göbl type I/1. SNS II, obverse type I(1) (but reverse type not recorded). Rare. Sharply struck and beautifully preserved. In NGC encapsulation, graded CH AU, 5/5, 3/5, brushed. Minor weakness on the reverse and faint hairlines, otherwise, extremely fine.
